Clark College maintains an advisory board consisting of working professionals, campus faculty, and department directors to keep informed about how creative professionals practice in the workplace. This insight allows the college to steer the DMA program, keeping current processes at the forefront of student education.

As joint chairs, Erin and Brian will split their duties and the voting rights during their tenure. Erin currently teaches in the DMA program at Clark College and has his voting rights rescinded when he has an active adjunct teaching term. In those cases, voting rights will fall to Brian on essential matters, while Erin will abstain from voting according to campus policy.

This new role is in line with the agency’s continued dedication to the formal education process of upcoming designers and developers. It is part of their ongoing commitment to giving back to the future of the creative community.

In November Shop partner, Erin Lynch, had the opportunity to reach a personal milestone when he had the opportunity to interview groundbreaking web designer and friend, Jeffrey Zeldman. The piece, Focusing on a Flexible Future: A Talk with Jeffrey Zeldman, was the second in a series of three articles Erin put together for AIGA Portland in 2017 on designers who have transitioned from corporate jobs to start their own studios. In the article, Jeffrey shares some fantastic insights into his time as a designer, what it takes to be a successful studio owner, the role of risk in the life of a designer, and some of the pratfalls he’s experienced along the way.

Erin also took a few minutes to share some of his own thoughts on his interview with Zeldman. His piece, My Interview with Jeffrey Zeldman, goes into a bit more depth into his thoughts on talking with his friend and former A List Apart team mate.

We’re extremely excited to announce that Brian Ferdinand, designer, developer, writer, and entrepreneur has joined Shop as a partner and creative director. Brian brings years of solid design and development experience to our growing studio and will continue to help us flesh out our infrastructure and internal studio strategy as we expand our reach as a regional and national studio.

Prior to joining Shop, Brian was a development director and senior developer at the Vancouver, WA design agency, Gravitate. In that role, he handled development duties for many of Gravitate’s top tier clients. He also acted as the primary point of contact for the rest of the development team—assisting in the hiring, training, and development of the department. He also helped to write and codify the successful design studio’s development process. We are lucky to have Brian as the newest member of our team.
